"I didn't send this e-mail, so why am I getting a bounce for something I didn't send?" Many of our customers are asking us this question. There's a simple explanation: Someone, somewhere has a computer that's infected with a virus. Unbeknownst to the computer's owner, the virus has sent out reams of spam with forged senders, using addresses it harvested from the mail program's address book, which, unluckily for you, contains your e-mail address. Undeliverable spam is bounced back to the apparent sender -- you. There's nothing you can do about it, short of convincing everyone who has your e-mail address in their address book to (1) remove it, or (2) install an effective anti-virus program on their computer. False bounces will plague us until people get serious about protecting their computers from viruses. We recommend the free edition of AVG, which can be downloaded using the link provided in our "Free Tools For Windows" article. |
